Amid Austin’s rapid growth, it’s easy to overlook the everyday leaders who are quietly strengthening our community. This month, we’re shining the light on one remarkable individual: Warinda Harris.

Meet the Hero

On October 21, 2025, the City of Austin officially named Warinda Harris a “Net-Zero Hero”. Her work with Central Texas Interfaith (CTI) focuses on advancing park equity and green-space access in East and South Austin — communities historically underserved when it comes to outdoor, walkable nature and community-driven park planning.

What She’s Doing

  • Warinda organizes neighborhood meetings, civic engagement efforts, and partners with organizations like Huston‑Tillotson University and city departments to ensure communities have input into green-space design.

  • She works under the umbrella of the national initiative People, Parks, and Power to help give residents a voice in how their neighborhood parks are developed.

  • Her focus on equity means making sure that growth and sustainability in Austin include everyone—not just the most visible neighborhoods.

Why This Matters

In a city where development moves fast, it’s all too easy for the needs of long-time residents and less-connected communities to get lost. Warinda’s work reminds us that home isn’t just about your house—it’s about your neighborhood, your access to nature and community, and your ability to participate in how those evolve. When green space is equitable, the benefits are shared: cleaner air, foot-traffic to local businesses, stronger mental health, and a deeper sense of belonging.

How You Can Support

  • Follow CTI’s calendar and attend a community meeting — bring a neighbor and encourage them to speak up about what they want for outdoor spaces.

  • Volunteer at a park cleanup or tree-planting day in East/South Austin during the upcoming months.

  • Share this story with your clients or circle—highlighting community-builders like Warinda helps deepen your connections and adds value beyond transactions.

Together, when we lift up people like Warinda, we uplift the entire city. Let’s keep shining a light on Austin’s kindness, creativity, and community spirit.
